Chapter 2

Evelyn flicked her head to the left, just in time to notice a thumb-thick Charr arrow headed straight for her. She tilted her body back about six inches, and she watched as the arrow whizzed past her head at eye-level. Sensing the need to reposition herself, she put her right knee to the ground, kicking suddenly with her left foot, and rolling deftly to a new position behind another small outcropping.

"Where did they come from?" Jaris shouted hoarsely, as he began slowly making his way across the rock he was balancing on.

"I don't know, but I don't mean to stick around and ask them." She paused to place another arrow into the nocking, drew the string tight, and loosed her fourteenth arrow. Seven Charr bodies were rolling down the steep cliffside, and seven more were screaming bloody murder at having been hit by the human they supposedly had taken by surprise. "Your presence on solid ground would certainly be appreciated."

Jaris paused, at least six feet from the edge the rock-bridge he was on, to cast «Chaos Storm» on a group of Charr approaching Evelyn from above. Either they hadn't seen him yet, or they must be daft and were ignoring him as a threat, because no arrows had been shot his way yet. If they neglected to consider him a threat, the entire lot of them would end up squandering away their capability to fight, their minds wracked with such devious hexes and spells that they would be powerless to stop Evelyn sticking them full of arrows like oversized pincushions.

At that moment, Jaris' left hand lost its' grip on the stone, and he collapsed heavily onto his chest. His pouch strap bounced off of his shoulder and caught on the inside of his elbow, dangling precariously over the basin far below.

As if his stumble had made a loud noise, several Charr situated above the falls spotted him. No sooner had he regained his balance than arrows were raining down on him from above. Quickly, he once again began to make his way off of the rock-bridge. Finally, his hand made contact with a patch of solid ground, and he quickly rolled away from the drop off and behind the outcropping Evelyn had been situated behind just moments before.

"Stay down. I can take them." Evelyn shouted over the torrent, and Jaris nodded solemnly. She loosed two more arrows and quickly dodged behind cover again. As she was maneuvering, she noticed several more Charr massing at the top of the hill above them. Pressing her back against a larger rock, she motioned upwards toward the new group of Charr. "I don't know... I think maybe I need just a little help."
